Ali

 Starring: Will Smith

 Directed by: Michael Mann

 Rated PG-13

 Original Release Year: 2001

 Genre: Drama

Synopsis: Muhammad Ali is arguably the best boxer ever. This story follows Ali during the first few years of his boxing career including his first World Title win, his conversion to Islam, his banishment from boxing and his return.

My Thoughts: I lost all respect for Ali after the tragedy of September 11th, when he said that America deserved all it got and more on that day. But this film has nothing to do with this, this is a film about the early years of a great boxer.

   Scorecard

Acting- Will Smith plays Cassius Clay who would later convert to Islam and change his name to Muhammad Ali, and would change history. Smith did an excellent job in the character, and it seems like he spent years trying to learn the way Ali spoke and acted. While the character of Ali was written really poorly (based on true events by the way.) Will Smith's job in this character was excellent and was worth the nomination he earned for best actor. (1)

Direction- Michael Mann has done some really big name movies, and most I have really enjoyed. This was not one of them. While it really isn't fair to blame the director for the way this movie turned out, there really is no one else too. There was no real flow to this movie, it was written to include tons of stuff in a generally small period of time (160 minutes). I was not impressed with the way the rushed things and just threw other things into the movie that really were not needed. (0)

Story- The way this story was written, it made you scratch your head. This is one of the greatest sports figure in history, and they really circle around the personal life instead of the boxing career. While they do talk about the boxing and do show some fun stuff inside the ring, there wasn't really a lot of it. To be honest, I really didn't care about the life of Muhammad Ali much, I just wanted to see boxing, and was thoroughly disappointed. (0)

Expectations- I was hoping this movie would be really enjoyable to watch, but sadly it seemed more of a task to finish watching this movie. (0)

Boring?- It's not every day I agree with Spike Lee, but he said it best about this movie..."I don't understand how a movie about one of the most exciting sports figures in history can be so boring." (0)

Final Score: 1 out of 5

Final Thoughts: If it weren't for Will Smith and to a lesser extent Jon Voight (who was also nominated as best supporting actor) this movie would have failed even more miserably than it did. I really suggest that you don't watch this movie, unless you are really a fan of boring biographies about exciting people made boring. If that last sentence made sense, don't see this film.
