The Avengers
Starring:
Uma Thurman, Ralph Fiennes and Sean Connery
Directed by:
Jeremiah S. Chechik
Rated PG-13
Genre:
Action
Synopsis: A
mad scientist is hell bent on controlling the worlds weather and it is up
to John Steed and Emma Peel to stop him.
My Thoughts:
The television series was way before my time, but I watched the old
re-runs with Diana Rigg and Patrick Macnee, and I loved the old time
english spy feel that the television series had, but sadly this film did
not have the same enthusiasm that the series had.
Scorecard
Acting-
I have never been a fan of Uma Thurman, I have like her in only one film,
and this was not it. She is overrated and she should not have been cast to
play Emma Peel. Ralph Fiennes is a very talented actor, but he did a
really terrible job as John Steed and Thurman and Fiennes together had absolutely
no chemistry between each other. Sean Connery as the mad scientist August
de Wynter was the only really interesting character (more on that in
story) but his acting job really fell flat. (0)
Direction-
The direction of the movie went NOWHERE. Which is a real shame because you
would think it would be really easy to make a good movie out of a really
successful television show. (0)
Story- A
mad scientist is trying to control earths weather. I have always liked the
idea of a crazy person trying to control the weather. I thought that the
general story was okay. I did not like the way the characters where
written though. (1/2)
Expectations-
I had expected way too much out of this movie. Like I said earlier, I
loved the show, so I was hoping that this film would be as good, until I
found out who was playing Emma Peel, and everything went down hill from
there. (0)
Boring?-
Sadly, this film was edited down to 90 minutes or so from 150 minutes, and
it was still a very boring movie. There was not a lot of action, there was
no suspense, there was nothing to keep you wanting more of this movie. And
I sure didn't want any more after the first 20 minutes. (0)
Final
Score: 1/2 out of 5
Final Thoughts: It's
a real shame that this movie wasn't better. This television show was one
of my favorites as a teenager, but the film turned out to be a complete
waste of time, money and energy. Do not see this film unless you like Uma
Thurman, and even then, do expect a whole lot.
