Diamonds are Forever
Starring: Sean Connery Directed by: Guy Hamilton Rated PG Genre: Action Original Release Year: 1971 Synopsis: Diamonds are being smuggled out of South Africa to supposedly inflate the prices of diamonds, James Bond is sent in undercover to see what is really going on. My Thoughts: Sean Connery is back as James Bond after George Lazenby decides that Bond isn't "cool enough for the 70's". Does this movie fail miserably like his last two films, or does it continue Bond greatness? Scorecard Acting- Sean Connery returns to play James Bond when offered a substantial amount of money. Can you blame him? Connery does a good acting job with the script he was given, but the real stars of this movie were the two actors that played the quasi-homosexual tandem of Mr. Kidd and Mr. Wint, those two were just so incredibly odd everything worked for them. (1) Direction- Guy Hamilton is back after some time away from the Bond series. His first Bond movie Goldfinger did a good job in keeping with the "Bond" feel, this movie was no different. There was a lot of action, pretty good acting, and some overall fun in Las Vegas. But there was something about the feel of the movie that made it a little over the top and a little unbelievable, and that is what hurt the movie. (1/2) Story- Some evil people are stealing diamonds in what everyone thinks is to make them more valuable, but that's not what it is for, they are making a laser powerful enough to destroy any target on earth. If that were it, this story would be great, but there was just something about the way it was played off that made it less than good. (1/2) Expectations- I was hoping this wouldn't be as bad as Connery's last two Bond films, and it wasn't, but it wasn't as great as his first two, and it was not as good as the film preceding this one either. (1/2) Boring?- This film suffered from "over the top syndrome" there were way too many scenes that were way overdone and that took away from the film, some parts in Vegas had you rolling your eyes it was so bad, and other parts had you laughing when you shouldn't have been. While this film wasn't boring, there were too many parts that were overly done, and it hurt the quality of the overall movie. (1/2) Final Score: 3 out of 5 Final Thoughts: While not nearly as great as some Bond movies, this film holds its own. Wint and Kidd were gold for some strange reason, and those two are worth the price of admission alone, but with the addition of hot women in bikini's doing karate, that adds value, but be forewarned, this is not a movie for anyone, but I do think that people would get a kick out of the strange antics of Mr. Wint and Mr. Kidd.
