Fried Green Tomatoes
Starring: Kathy Bates and
Jessica Tandy
Directed by: Jon Avnet
Rated PG-13
Genre: Drama
Synopsis: A middle aged woman
meets and elderly woman at a nursing home while visiting a relative. A
friendship quickly sparks between the two and the older lady beings to
tell the story of where she grew up.
My Thoughts: This movie is a
total chick flick. Not that it is a bad thing, but be ready to be bored.
Having a running time of 136 minutes, this movie feels like it drags for
more than that.
Scorecard:
Acting-
Kathy Bates plays the middle aged Evelyn and Jessica Tandy plays the old
Ninny, both of which you don't see a whole lot in the movie as it is
mostly flashbacks, but they both did a good job. The best acting job in my
opinion actually came from Chris O'Donnell who played Buddy, for some
reason, I really thought that he did a very good job, and that is saying
something for O'Donnell, who isn't known for his acting ability. (1)
Direction-
Being based on a book, there is some massive differences. While most
wouldn't be noticed unless you have read the book, I personally think that
they would have added to the movie. The two central characters (during the
flashbacks) in the book where basically lesbians and were having a loving
affair with each other, but in the movie, they shied away form it, in fact
they really didn't mention it at all, during the DVD commentary, I believe
the director said that the food fight scene was supposed to be symbolic...
but it really didn't make sense. The direction still wasn't terrible, but
there was nothing grand either. (1/2)
Story-
A woman becomes friends with an old lady, the old lady begins to tell the
woman about her past and the times she grew up and that's really it.
The story was so generic that it is really hard to get into. (0)
Expectations- I
wasn't expecting anything with this movie, and I wasn't disappointed. (1/2)
Boring?-
Yes. The story flows, but it flows at such a slow pace it makes you think
you are watching paint dry. (0)
Final Score: 2
out of 5
Final Thoughts: The Internet
Movie Database (IMDB) rated this movie as a 4.5 out of 10. That is less
than average. My rating is 2 out of 5, and that is less than average. We
actually agree on something. This movie, while actually watchable, really
isn't that special. The acting was very good, but that is the only thing
that makes this movie any good. A good friend of mine was saying she loves
this movie. While I can understand why she does, ( the whole thing about
being female! ) it really isn't something that most people should go out
of their ways to see. Especially the male population. Sorry Sandy!
