The Legend of Zorro
Starring: Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta-Jones Directed by: Martin Campbell Rated PG Genre: Family/Action Synopsis: After 10 years of fighting crime as Zorro, Alejandro de la Vega begins to realize that he needs to spend more time with his wife and son. My Thoughts: Don't get me wrong. I like the Zorro character, but this movie was bastardized because the addition of the son into the plot. I have no problem with Mrs. de la Vega kicking some serious ass, but I do have a problem with a ten year old boy beating on grown men and winning. Scorecard Acting- The acting in this movie was very bland. I could tell that no one was trying very hard in the making of this movie. Banderas was as usual pretty good, and Catherine Zeta-Jones was trying, but she couldn't overcome the bad writing and the supporting cast around her. (1/2) Direction- This was a huge disappointment. I did not like the way this movie went. The director spent way too much time on building stories up, with no pay off really. This movie had little to no flow to it. (0) Story- Zorro is losing his wife because she doesn't like him fighting crime, and not spending time with her and her son. So she tells him to leave and she begins to see a count that is hell-bent on destroying the United States. Sounds okay right? It wasn't. The story was written to revolve around the kid, and it really hurt the movie. This was kidded down so they could get the PG rating, it was a disaster. (0) Expectations- I was hoping this movie would be as good as the first movie, The Mask of Zorro, it was no where near the quality of the first movie. (0) Boring?- This category should get a negative star. This film was both boring and hokey in a bad way. Way too much build on some of the story and the action from this film looked to be written by a six year old on crack. It was very dull and very predictable and way to kiddy for what it should have been. (0) Final Score: 1/2 out of 5 Final Thoughts: This movie was the biggest disappointment of 2005. Following the great Mask of Zorro movie, this was just crap. If you really want to see it, be my guest, it makes a fun movie for kids to watch, but if you are expecting great action and a great story you really need to look somewhere else.
