Meet Joe Black

Starring: Brad Pitt, Anthony Hopkins, Claire Forlani

Directed by: Martin Brest or Alan Smithee (depending on the version you see.) (more under direction.)

 Rated PG-13

 Genre: Romance

Synopsis: Death takes a vacation and overtakes the body of a young man just to see what it would be like to be human.

My Thoughts: While the story is interesting enough, the longevity of this movie was enough to make some people gouge their eyes out.

 Scorecard:

Acting- Brad Pitt as death was a terrible idea. He really wasn't creepy enough, even if he was just a guy that death took over, he just didn't act the way he really should have. Anthony Hopkins plays the nasty rich old grumpy bastard really well, but not good enough to give this category a good rating. (0)

Direction- Martin Brest (the same guy that did the crapfest known as Gigli!) directed the theatrical release of this film. This is the guy that said it would be a good idea to have a three hour love story about a guy possessed by death fall in love with some young hottie, then leaves. That is the whole story. He wanted all the extra stuff, like Anthony Hopkins standing around for five minutes looking around, it was bad. A re-release was made that was cut down to two hours, but it cut out some important things about the Hopkins character, so it was really hard to follow the movie then. Brest (the original director) didn't like what they did to his film, and didn't want his name attached to the new shorter version, so thats where Alan Smithee comes in. You see...Smithee is a pseudonym for any Hollywood director that doesn't want to have their names attached to really bad things. And the "re-cut" of this movie was REALLY bad. (0)

Story- I really liked the story, or at least the premise for the movie. It wasn't all that bad...the only thing that made this movie bad was the execution. This story was used in "Death takes a Holiday" from 1934. That movie was much better. (1/2)

Expectations- I had seen "Death takes a Holiday" before I saw this. I was expecting this to be that good. It wasn't. (0)

Boring?- Depending on the version you see. The three hour version is of course very boring, but the two hour version isn't as boring, but it is confusing as hell. This category gets a zero because they tried twice to make this movie a success, and failed both times. (0)

Final Score: 1/2 out of 5

Final Thoughts: Don't let the rating fool you. Just because it isn't a DUNG! doesn't mean it doesn't deserve to be. Lots of people would give it a Zero rating because it was a bad movie, but because I have seen the original movie that this was a remake of, I couldn't rightfully give it a zero rating. This movie personifies the reasons to avoid some movies like the plague. This movie will bore you to tears and leave you with more questions than answers and really piss you off. Stay away from this movie...plain and simple.
