Scorecard
Acting-
Charlton Heston has been in a lot of movie where he seems to overact a
little, this movie is no difference, but his overacting actually helps
move this plot along nicely. With the addition of Roddy McDowell as Dr. Cornelius
doing a very good job and Kim Hunter as Zira doing a phenomenal job, every
actor in this movie seemed to go out of their ways to do great jobs.
(1)
Direction- Franklin Schaffner does a very good job in
commanding great performances from his actors. He would later on become an
academy award winning director for Patton. This film had very good
direction, the plot flowed nicely and everything clicked very well. (1)
Story-
An astronaut goes through a time warp and ends up what he thought was a
distant planet ruled by apes. This is perhaps one of the best written
stories of cinema. The ending is what makes this story golden. Props to
the screenwriter and the novelist for this wonderful story. (1)
Expectations-
When you hear about this movie, you expect nothing but greatness, and of
course that is exactly what you get, nothing more, and nothing less.
Sadly, it does not exceed expectations so it does not get a complete star.
(1/2)
Boring?-
This category always seems to hurt films that I review. The entire film as
a whole was not dull, but there were some crucial story telling times
where the film seemed to drag quite a bit, and those times dragged the
whole movie down in my eyes, but since there were only times that this
film was boring and not the entire film as a whole, it gets a half. (1/2)
Final Score:
4 out of 5
Final Thoughts: This
movie will go down as one of the best films ever to grace the silver
screen. I agree whole heartedly about that, this is one of the finer films
I personally have ever seen. If you have not seen this movie, this is one
of the few films I will ever recommend that you MUST see at least once in
your lifetime.
