This week I really couldn't decide on what to
recommend to you. I thought long and hard, and then I had a friend suggest
something. so here we go.
The
Shawshank Redemption
Starring: Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman
Directed By: Frank Darabont
Rated: R
Running Time: 144 minutes
Synopsis: In
1947 an man is sentenced to two life sentences in Maine for a double
murder he did not commit.
My Thoughts: Red
(played by Morgan Freeman) is by far the best character in this movie. He
is so subtle and so calm. The story was very compelling and it keeps you
intrigued for the duration of the movie. This movie didn't make a whole
lot in the theaters (only making about $28 million) (considering the
widest released was less than a thousand theaters, it is impressive.) but
it was the home video and soon after DVD that would make this film
incredibly successful. This was by far Tim Robbins best movie, and his
greatest role. (I am not a huge Tim Robbins fan, but I think he was
phenomenal in this movie.)
Scorecard:
Acting:
The acting in this movie was UNBELIEVABLE!!! Robbins and
Freeman both did great jobs in their roles. (1)
Story: This
story was very well done. The characters were believable and the whole
story was just well written (by Stephen King from what I understand) (1)
Direction:
The direction of the movie was a little off, there were a few
parts where they could have changed just a tad, or moved them to a
different part of the movie, but nothing substantial. (1/2)
Expectations:
I didn't expect anything from this movie when I first saw it. I
am not a Tim Robbins fan and I didn't know anything about the story so I
was really expecting a flop, and was surprised. (1)
Does
it bore?: Sadly, yes it does a little. There are a few times
where its on total down time, but it really doesn't bore the hell out of
me, as there is a lot of great stuff before and after the down times. (1/2)
Final
Score: 4 out of 5.
Final Thoughts: This
movie was well acted and the story was great. This is one of the finest
movies I have seen, the tone was serious, but was a very light serious and
was just really enjoyable to watch.
