 Scores:

Acting-In a word...HA! Well, okay, that is more of a stifling laugh than anything else. Ben Stiller plays Tugg, an action star that has been having problems doing anything else, his character is a typical muscle head that learns his way...good, but not great. Jack Black plays the overweight drug addicted Jeff that is always cast in the comedy roles, and is laughed at because of his fart jokes...again, good but not great. The stand out performance is easily Robert Downey Jr. as Kirk, the Australian numerous award winning actor that went through a controversial operation to become black for the role in this film. He played the character incredibly well, was funny at times, was believable at others. Also starring in this film is Matthew McConaughey as Tugg Speedmans agent, he was a last minute replacement for Owen Wilson during his "suicide thingy", McConaughey's performance was good enough for the role, but I personally would have loved to have seen Wilson there. Nick Nolte as Four Leaf was very good for the creepy Vietnam Vet that wrote the book that this film was being based on. Tom Cruise as the backer of the film was very funny, in an extremely awkward way. The OVERALL cast was pretty good, but not fantastic.

Direction- This film starts out AWESOME. It begins with fake trailers of films that the actors in Tropic Thunder have appeared in before and the films that they are known for. Sadly, for the direction of the film, that was the greatest part. Stiller did just enough for the film to continue until the ending, but it seemed kind of pedestrian.

Story- Actors playing Actors is always a good idea, if not confusing. This was a very funny idea. Take actors, throw them into a real warzone and let them act for real. The story was funny, and pretty well written, it is hard to understand why such a well written story turns out to be this generic.

Expectations- I was hoping that it would be a very funny movie, on the level of Zoolander or Anchorman. It wasn't. Now, it is unfair to compare this movie to the two previously stated films because they are not the same kind of comedies. But still it did not meet expectations.

Entertainment Value- This is the one true shining light of this flim! I was very well entertained. It was just a different kind of entertainment, one that you don't know if you loved it or hated it, but either way you are entertained by what was happening on the screen.

 Final Rating: out of 5

 Final Thoughts:

While this movie was entertaining, there was just something about it that left it in the "Average" category rather than the "Great" category. I would recommend seeing this film, but only slightly, if you have a cheap theater near by, or have nothing better to do on your day off, go and see it at Matinee prices.
